Berane is a town and municipality located in Serbia and Montenegro, situated in the north-east of Montenegro. There are 40,885 people in the Beran? municipality (2003 census). It is a multiconfessional city, with a Serbian Orthodox majority and Muslim minority.
Berane was established in 1862. Forming a part of the Sanjak of Novi Pazar From July 1949 to March 1992, Berane was known as Ivangrad.
